Top Ten Anime Series of 2013

top10

The end of 2013 has come and like everywhere else, I think it is time to look back on the year to see what the top something of something is and today felt like a top ten anime series kind of day! I couldn’t just base this on my own opinion since…well…I’ve been a little behind in watching so there are a LOT of new series I need to set my eyes on. So I took my own opinions and then went around and collected data from many different polls and discussions around the web to bring you a valid top ten list based on not just my own opinion but the opinions of the many!

10 – Arpeggio of Blue Steel
(Aoki Hagane no Arupejio)

Arpeggio of Blue Steel

Kind of like an animated take of Battlestar Galactica on land, humans are in a long losing battle against computer (AI) controlled ships. Basically Gundam in the water (to use another simile). Repetitive? Maybe…but it’s quite popular regardless (Look at how big Dragon Ball got back in it’s time…and that show took 43 episodes just to change a light bulb [joke stolen from Animevortex member “Josenko”]).

9 – Boundary of Emptiness
(Kara no Kyōkai)

Boundary of Emptiness

Boundary of Emptiness (Kara no Kyōkai) “The Garden of Sinners” is a darker story about a teenage girl, who possesses the “Mystic Eyes of Death Perception”, a supernatural ability that allows the user to see the “death” of everything in existence and kill the object by destroying its “origin”. She recently recovered from a two-year coma caused by a traffic accident. Prior to the traffic accident, she originally had two personalities, a male personality named Shiki (織), and the original female personality Shiki (式). The storyline continues to go much more in depth than that. The series is split into multiple one hour segments, with the 8th segment recently this year which made $1,710,413 by October 20th (not too shabby!).

8 – Tamayura – More Aggressive

Tamayura - More Aggressive

Centered around a first-year high school student named Fū Sawatari who loves photography, the series simply involves her quest in making friends and she eventually starts a photography club. A simple story like that has a calm moving pace to it with no real purpose outside of …people enjoy it. Watch for yourself and share your own opinion below on what you like most about the series.

7 – Genshiken Second Season

Genshiken Second Season

It’s second season (obviously), Genshiken looks to recruit new club members, but in the excitement there is fear that the club is taking a turn in the wrong direction. If you have seen the first season and enjoyed it, obviously you will probably enjoy this one just the same. If you haven’t even heard of the series, then obviously you are best with starting from the first season. Honestly , I couldn’t give you an opinion myself since this is one I haven’t watched yet and haven’t been pulled in by it’s plot. Regardless, it’s popularity leads it to finding a spot on the list.

6 – The Fighting!
(Hajime no Ippo)

The Fighting

A boxer (Takamura) rescues a student (Ippo) from being badly beaten up. Ippo is amazed by Takamura’s skills and pushes to learn the art of boxing, eventually leading him into the professional world. Another anime packed with and centered around fighting, it has made a major impression in viewers sending it’s popularity skyrocketing. If you like anime and fighting themed series, this will be one for you.

(Moeru Shinryakusha)

Outbreak Company

Shinichi Kanou is a young secluded Otaku who is offered a job thanks to his vast knowledge of anime, video games and manga and just after meeting his new employer, he is kidnapped, awakening in an alternate world with a fantasy setup. He becomes a medium for relations between the two worlds and teaches the new world the art of geek culture. Unique? I’d say so. Unique is always worth a watch!

2 – Monogatari (Story) Second Season

Monogatari Series Second Season

Another show with magic and demons, it pushes on from the previous season (season”s” if you account for prequels). Tsubasa Hanekawa’s house ends up burning down and her place of residence changes due to a lie and the road ahead is challenged by the disappearance of Araragi. If you haven’t yet, you would be better off watching the first season before coming to this one. Once again, if you liked the first one, you will enjoy this one just the same.

1 – Attack on Titan
(Shingeki no Kyojin)

Attack on Titan

Now this is a series that everyone is or will be watching. It dates back into the history, hundreds of years ago, where humans were nearly snuffed out by giants who took pleasure in killing us. Current time, giants haven’t been seen in over 100 years when one mysteriously makes an appearance and the main character witnesses the destruction, experiences a strong personal loss and vows revenge against the giants. The animation style includes a mix of old and new to give it a very artistically pleasing feel.
